An optional fine-clarification route

Tubular ultrafiltration system

Tubular membrane modules provide a clarification stage for a suitably prepared juice stream. The module banks, pump circuit, pipe headers and controls form a separate machine package from the coarse screens used around fruit extraction.

Separate the liquid across a membrane

A pressure difference drives the passing liquid fraction through the selected membrane while retained components remain on the feed side. The process therefore has a permeate stream and a retained stream whose handling must both be included in the line design.

The tubular arrangement groups repeated membrane housings into connected banks. The visible return bends, headers and pump connections illustrate the circulation layout; the selected membrane specification establishes the actual separation behaviour.

Choose clarification for the intended ingredient

Use fine clarification when the product needs a different suspended-solids profile from the juice leaving coarse finishing. A cloudy pineapple juice is a deliberate product choice and does not automatically require membrane clarification.

Evaluate the prepared juice for pulp, fibre, viscosity and any conditioning needed before the membrane. Coarse residues belong in the upstream separation plan. The membrane stage should receive the agreed feed rather than serve as the first removal point for extraction debris.

Evaluate performance through the operating run

Flow through a membrane can change as material accumulates at the surface. A useful product trial therefore follows the run, not only the first clear sample. Record the feed condition, permeate quality and flow alongside the retained-stream balance and cleaning recovery.

Membrane area or an initial water-flow measurement does not establish a pineapple juice capacity. The selected operating window and cleaning sequence should be documented with the actual product duty.

Keep clarification and product preservation separate

The clarified stream continues to the selected concentration, thermal and packaging operations. Ultrafiltration changes the separation profile; it is not a replacement for the validated preservation process required by the finished product.

Provide isolation, drainage and access to module connections in the installation. Any shared CIP supply must respect the membrane-specific chemical, temperature and pressure limits rather than reuse another machine cleaning programme unchanged.

Practical questions

Is ultrafiltration required for every pineapple juice line?

No. It is a selected clarification operation. The desired juice character, upstream separation and actual membrane duty determine whether it belongs in the line.
